Based on the Lear 28/29 models, the Learjet 55 was designed with increased wingspan and high-strength winglets to reduce drag, with its wingtips leading it to acquire the nickname “Longhorn”. The Lear 55 originally debuted in 1979 and was intended to be a production line offering more room than the smaller 25 and 35/A, but instead of a triple lineup consisting of the Learjet 54/55/56, only the Lear 55 was produced.
Later variants were released including the Learjet 55B in 1986, featuring a glass cockpit, improved runway performance, and increased range; the Learjet 55C, featuring a redesigned fuselage and aerodynamic upgrades to improve stability; and the Learjet 55 ER, an extended range variant of the Lear 55C. Production ended on the Lear 55 in 1987 with the introduction of the Learjet 60.
